Aga Ruhullah Announces Decision to Quit NC, Says He Will Resign as Srinagar MP; Launches Scathing Attack on Omar Abdullah , Questions Chief Minister’s political stand, says he will not compromise dignity and principles for the sake of power
Srinagar, November 3: ANB; Senior National Conference leader and Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Tuesday announced his decision to part ways with the National Conference (NC) and stated that he would resign from his Lok Sabha membership, launching a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the party leadership.
Addressing a gathering at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam on the death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi, Ruhullah expressed strong dissatisfaction with the party's functioning, accusing its leadership of failing to honour commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir during the Assembly elections.
Ruhullah maintained that his differences with the NC were rooted in political and ideological principles rather than personal ambitions or the denial of any party position. He said he was unwilling to remain associated with an organisation that, in his assessment, had failed to stand firmly by its commitments on the restoration of Article 370, constitutional safeguards, reservation policy and the release of prisoners.
Taking a direct swipe at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Ruhullah questioned his political position on Article 370, alleging that the Chief Minister had altered his stand shortly after the Assembly elections under pressure from the BJP.
Referring to NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah, Ruhullah made a pointed remark, saying that he should teach the Quran to his son, Omar Abdullah, whom he described as 'Na-Ahal', while accusing the Chief Minister of abandoning his earlier political position.
In another sharp political remark directed at Omar Abdullah, Ruhullah said, “People who lose chairs get unhappy, but here we are throwing away a chair, and we are happy.”
He further remarked, “The chair you are sitting on right now is a source of sadness for both you and us.”
Emphasising the importance of personal dignity and self-respect in public life, Ruhullah said he hoped never to become so dependent on power that he would have to compromise his principles to retain a political position.
“I pray to God that I never become so dependent on power that I have to throw away my cap to hold on to it,” he said, adding that the Chief Minister should not have to sacrifice his dignity for the sake of remaining in office.
Ruhullah asserted that his political position was not motivated by the pursuit of power or official positions, but by his commitment to principles, dignity and the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Outlining his future political course, he clarified that his intention was not simply to leave one political party and join another. Instead, he expressed his desire to bring together honest, committed and politically conscious young people from Jammu and Kashmir on a common platform.
He also appealed to parents to encourage their educated and hardworking children to participate in public life and contribute towards meaningful social and political change.
Ruhullah said he wanted to establish a platform comprising sincere young people who understand the challenges confronting society and are committed to safeguarding the interests of Jammu and Kashmir.
His announcement marks a significant political development for the National Conference and comes amid growing differences over the party's political commitments, leadership and approach towards major constitutional and governance-related issues.
The Srinagar parliamentary seat, however, will become officially vacant only after the Lok Sabha Speaker accepts his formal resignation. Any subsequent by-election will be held in accordance with the applicable constitutional and electoral provisions.
