JAMMU, MARCH 29: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday flagged off the first-ever Jammu Marathon from Maulana Azad Stadium and also completed the 21.1-kilometre Half Marathon in under two hours, setting a personal example in promoting fitness and healthy living.
Despite inclement weather, hundreds of participants took part in the event, including Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, senior legislators, the Chief Secretary, fitness icon Milind Soman and actress Gul Panag. The marathon turned into a vibrant display of resilience and unity while also carrying a strong message against drug abuse.
Leading from the front, the Chief Minister participated in the run alongside citizens, urging people across all sections of society to adopt an active lifestyle. He emphasised that physical fitness is essential for overall well-being and plays a key role in societal progress.
Highlighting the theme “Temples to Trails,” the Chief Minister said the initiative aims to position Jammu as a hub for fitness tourism and cultural exploration. He noted that the marathon route passed through key markets, heritage sites and prominent landmarks, showcasing the city’s blend of spirituality, history and natural beauty.
The marathon commenced shortly before sunrise and was organised by the Department of Tourism, with Jammu & Kashmir Bank as the title sponsor. The event featured three categories—Half Marathon (21 km), 10-km Fitness Run and 5-km Fun Run—with a total prize pool of ₹1.33 crore.
The inaugural edition witnessed participation from over 4,000 runners, including more than 1,000 from outside Jammu and Kashmir and over 90 international athletes. Participants from diverse backgrounds ran through rain-soaked streets, reflecting a growing culture of fitness and community engagement in the Union Territory.
Speaking on the occasion, Gul Panag lauded the enthusiasm of participants and organisers, describing the turnout as remarkable for a debut event despite adverse weather conditions. She congratulated all stakeholders for the successful आयोजन.
Milind Soman termed the marathon a significant milestone for the region, expressing hope that such initiatives would continue to inspire people to embrace running and an active lifestyle.
