Ladakh’s Pashmina and Traditional Handicrafts Shine at Lakmé Fashion Week in New Delhi

New Delhi, October 2026: Ladakh’s renowned Pashmina, traditional shawls, handwoven textiles, intricate embroidery and indigenous handicrafts are being showcased at Lakmé Fashion Week, being held from October 13 to 18 at The Taj, New Delhi, providing a prestigious national platform to the Union Territory’s rich cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship. A dedicated stall at the fashion event features an exquisite collection of Pashmina products, traditional textiles and locally crafted handicrafts, highlighting the artistic skills of Ladakh’s artisans, weavers, spinners and women entrepreneurs. At the heart of Ladakh’s celebrated Pashmina industry lies the traditional knowledge, dedication and resilience of the Changthang community. The region’s pastoral way of life is closely associated with the Changra goats, which produce the exceptionally fine Pashmina fibre. Despite the harsh climatic conditions of the high-altitude Changthang plateau, local herders have preserved this centuries-old tradition, making Ladakh Pashmina a symbol of the region’s cultural identity and the close relationship between its people and the land. The exhibition traces the journey of Pashmina from the remote pastures of Changthang to finely crafted products that blend traditional techniques with contemporary design. The displayed collections reflect the creativity, craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit of the people who sustain Ladakh’s distinctive handloom and handicrafts traditions. A major highlight of the event is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, when designers from Ladakh will present their collections on the fashion runway. The showcase will feature exquisite Pashmina creations, traditional embroidery and contemporary interpretations of indigenous textiles, bringing Ladakh’s unique artistic heritage to the national fashion platform. The participation also recognises the contribution of Changthang’s pastoral communities, local artisans, skilled craftspeople and women-led Self-Help Groups (SHGs), whose efforts play a vital role in preserving traditional skills and sustaining local livelihoods. By connecting Ladakh’s traditional crafts with the wider fashion industry, the initiative aims to expand market access, strengthen local enterprises and create sustainable economic opportunities for artisans and entrepreneurs. The initiative reflects the broader efforts of the Union Territory Administration, the Department of Industries and Commerce, and the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) Scheme to strengthen Ladakh’s handicrafts and handloom sector. The efforts focus on supporting artisans and SHGs, upgrading traditional skills, encouraging entrepreneurship and enhancing the market visibility of locally produced goods. From the rugged high-altitude pastures of Changthang to the fashion runway in New Delhi, Ladakh’s Pashmina represents a remarkable blend of natural heritage, traditional knowledge and skilled craftsmanship. The showcase offers an opportunity to introduce Ladakh’s distinctive products to new audiences while reinforcing the importance of preserving indigenous skills, promoting local enterprises and creating new avenues for economic growth.
