This landmark step is aimed at ensuring rapid response to cyber financial crimes and marks a major milestone toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a 'Cyber Secure Bharat'.
Initially launched as a pilot project in Delhi, the e-Zero FIR system will automatically register FIRs for cyber financial crime complaints exceeding ₹10 lakh, filed either through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) or via the cybercrime helpline number 1930. These FIRs will be registered with the e-Crime Police Station in Delhi and promptly forwarded to the appropriate territorial cybercrime police stations. according to the News Service Associated News Bureau ANB that
The Home Minister emphasized that this initiative addresses long-standing challenges faced by victims of cyber fraud, particularly the delay in money recovery due to procedural bottlenecks. By integrating the systems of I4C, Delhi Police, and the National Crime Records Bureau’s Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS), the new mechanism ensures swift conversion of complaints into actionable FIRs, allowing for faster investigation and resolution.
Complainants will also be able to visit the cybercrime police station within three days to have the Zero FIR converted into a regular FIR, in line with the new provisions under Section 173 (1) and 1(ii) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The initiative will soon be expanded nationwide to ensure a uniform response system for cybercrime complaints across India. The government is committed to strengthening the country’s cybersecurity framework and taking decisive action against cybercriminals.
This digital advancement enhances not only the ease of registering cybercrime cases but also significantly improves the probability of financial recovery for victims and the prosecution of offenders. ANB
