IIM Jammu Marks Decade of Growth as LG Sinha Calls for Global Excellence and Distinctive Identity

JAMMU, August 22, 2026: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday joined the Board of Governors, faculty, students, alumni and distinguished guests at the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu, lauding its remarkable growth and calling upon the institution to emerge among the world’s leading business schools over the next decade. Recalling IIM Jammu’s modest beginnings with 56 students at a temporary campus on Canal Road, Sinha said the institute had, within a decade, evolved into one of India’s fastest-emerging and internationally engaged management institutions. He noted that IIM Jammu has become the fifth IIM in the country to secure both AMBA and EFMD accreditations and has established academic collaborations with institutions across France, Morocco, South Korea, Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan and Brazil. Its research output, he said, has also expanded significantly, from just two published papers in 2017 to nearly 350 this year. The Lieutenant Governor credited the institute’s achievements to the sustained efforts of Director Professor B.S. Sahay, the faculty, Board of Governors, students and alumni, describing its decade-long journey as an example that other business schools could emulate. Drawing lessons from the evolution of leading global institutions such as Harvard, Stanford and Wharton, Sinha said IIM Jammu should develop a distinctive academic identity rather than attempting to replicate established models. He called upon the institute to build its own tradition of case-based learning rooted in Indian enterprise, particularly the logistical, entrepreneurial and developmental challenges of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh. Sinha also stressed the need to strengthen experiential learning, urging the institute to ensure that every student undertakes a tangible real-world project before graduation through entrepreneurship initiatives, policy challenges or engagement with local businesses. “Research with a sharp edge” should be another priority, he said, calling for greater focus on border economies, sustainable development and frontier entrepreneurship—areas in which IIM Jammu is uniquely positioned to contribute. The Lieutenant Governor further emphasised that placements should be viewed as more than career opportunities, describing them as part of a broader nation-building mission. He expressed hope that IIM Jammu graduates would go on to transform major companies, establish leading enterprises and contribute to India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He said the real test of management education lies beyond classrooms, in corporate boardrooms, markets and everyday life, where decisions have to be taken amid incomplete information, competing interests and complex challenges. “IIM Jammu must ask itself what can be done in the fields of administration, sustainable development and entrepreneurship in the economies of border areas,” Sinha said, stressing that leading institutions gain their stature by providing answers to difficult national challenges. He expressed confidence that if IIM Jammu pursued its next decade with the same determination and ambition, it would earn global recognition and become a source of pride for Jammu Kashmir and the country. On the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor also released seven coffee-table books published by IIM Jammu. Padma Shri Dr Milind Pralhad Kamble, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM Jammu; former Chairman of the Board of Governors, Shri Sriram Dandekar; Board member Shri Anand Kripalu; IIM Jammu Director Professor B.S. Sahay; Shri S. Shivakumar, Operating Partner, Advent International; vice-chancellors of various universities; heads of departments, faculty members and students of IIM Jammu; prominent citizens; and senior police and civil administration officials attended the celebrations.
