Indian Army’s Remount and Veterinary Corps Marks 247th Corps Day

The Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC), among the oldest arms of the Indian Army, marked its 247th Corps Day, commemorating nearly 250 years of dedicated and distinguished service. Tracing its origins to the Stud Department established in Bengal in 1779, the Corps underwent several reorganisations before being formally designated as the Remount and Veterinary Corps in 1960. It was awarded the President’s Colours in 1989 in recognition of its exemplary service.

Guided by its motto, “Pashu Seva Asmakam Dharma” (Service to Animals is Our Duty), the RVC plays a vital role in supporting Army operations through the care, management and deployment of military animals. The Corps has rendered commendable service during both World Wars and all post-Independence conflicts, contributing significantly to the Army’s operational readiness.

The RVC is entrusted with the breeding, rearing, training and supply of horses, mules and Army dogs to Animal Holding Units across the Army. It also collaborates with national institutions, including the Department of Biotechnology, National Institute of Communicable Diseases, National Research Centre for Equines, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Indian Veterinary Research Institute, to address animal diseases, promote research and support India’s One Health and zoonotic disease management initiatives.

In the logistics domain, the Corps ensures mobility in remote and high-altitude terrain, where mules remain a reliable and cost-effective means of transporting essential supplies to locations inaccessible to vehicles or aircraft. Army dogs, trained in eight specialised skills, play a critical role in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, with several canines such as Axel, Zoom, Mansi, Kent and Phantom displaying exceptional courage and making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Reflecting the Indian Army’s commitment to women’s empowerment, the RVC began inducting women officers in 2023. Seven women officers have been commissioned so far, including one selected for the Army’s first Women Skydiving Team. The Corps has also contributed to national pandemic preparedness, notably by supporting RT-PCR testing and COVID-19 care facilities during the pandemic.

Beyond its core military responsibilities, the RVC contributes to nation-building through NCC equestrian training, humanitarian veterinary outreach in remote areas and participation in United Nations missions. It also advances military diplomacy by gifting trained animals to friendly nations.

On the occasion of its 247th Corps Day, the Indian Army reaffirmed its appreciation of the Remount and Veterinary Corps for its professionalism, operational excellence and enduring service to the nation.
