LG Sinha Calls for Bridging Urban-Rural Healthcare Gaps, Strengthening Medical Research

Srinagar, October 14, 2026: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday congratulated Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar, on organising a conference titled “Advancing Internal Medicine: From Evidence to Excellence in Clinical Practice,” emphasising the need for accessible, evidence-based and compassionate healthcare. In his message, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the crucial role of physicians in diagnosing complex medical conditions, delivering patient-centred care and strengthening the healthcare system. He said internal medicine requires a comprehensive understanding of the human body, sound clinical judgement, careful observation and the ability to interpret seemingly minor symptoms that may indicate serious underlying conditions. Describing observation, reason, human understanding and courage as defining qualities of a physician, Sinha said doctors often serve as the first point of medical contact for families and build long-standing relationships based on trust, compassion and scientific evidence. He also commended GMC Srinagar for its significant contribution to medical education and healthcare, noting that generations of doctors trained at the institution continue to serve people across Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country. Highlighting emerging healthcare challenges, the Lieutenant Governor said that while infectious diseases remain a concern, lifestyle-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, fatty liver disease and cardiovascular ailments are assuming alarming proportions. He stressed the need to ensure that advances in diagnostics, therapeutics and medical technology reach patients and healthcare professionals in rural and remote areas as effectively as they do in urban centres. “The greatest need today is to ensure that these innovations are not available only to physicians in large cities, but also reach doctors in villages. We must ensure that there is not even the slightest gap between urban and rural areas in access to facilities and available tools,” he said, identifying equitable healthcare access as a key priority for the medical community. LG Outlines Six Priorities for Medical Community The Lieutenant Governor called for strengthening indigenous medical research and generating scientific evidence suited to India's diverse population. He said the country's demographic diversity, combined with the expertise and commitment of its medical professionals, offered significant opportunities for scientific discovery and innovation. Outlining a five-year roadmap for the medical community, Sinha proposed six key priorities: Expanding access to medical knowledge through digital health platforms and telemedicine. Promoting preventive healthcare and the early detection of diseases. Responsible use of technology and artificial intelligence, while preserving clinical judgement. Strengthening medical research and indigenous scientific capabilities. Prioritising doctors' wellbeing by improving working conditions and addressing professional burnout. Preserving compassion in healthcare, ensuring that humanity remains central to patient care. Emphasising the importance of prevention, Sinha said early detection of diabetes, hypertension and liver disease could reduce treatment costs and help prevent complications. He urged physicians and specialists in internal medicine to lead community-level awareness campaigns against lifestyle-related diseases, observing that medical professionals could play an influential role in shaping public health behaviour. The Lieutenant Governor also called upon young doctors to remain curious, embrace innovation and learn from experienced mentors. He urged senior physicians to share their clinical expertise generously and guide the next generation of healthcare professionals. Underscoring the importance of supporting those who provide medical care, Sinha said the hard work, dedication and service of doctors must be recognised. He stressed that hospitals and medical institutions should ensure better workplaces and working conditions, adding that the wellbeing of healthcare professionals deserved priority alongside patient care. Reiterating the centrality of compassion in medicine, the Lieutenant Governor said scientific progress must go hand in hand with human understanding, equitable access and a commitment to serving every patient with dignity.
