Satish Sharma Highlights Transport, Tourism and Innovation as Key Drivers of J&K’s Economic Growth

Srinagar, May 31: Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports, Transport, and Science & Technology, Satish Sharma, on Sunday emphasized the critical role of modern transportation, tourism promotion, innovation, and entrepreneurship in accelerating the Union Territory’s economic transformation. The Minister made these remarks after inaugurating a fleet of Volvo buses introduced by Star World Ventures at Countryside Resort in Srinagar. The initiative is aimed at strengthening transport infrastructure, enhancing tourist mobility, and improving connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the gathering, Sharma said that world-class transportation facilities are essential for promoting tourism, facilitating trade, and supporting overall economic development. He noted that the introduction of premium transport services would improve travel experiences for both tourists and residents while contributing to the sustained growth of the tourism sector. The event was attended by MLA Eidgah Mubarak Gul, senior government officials, representatives of the tourism and business sectors, and members of the Chamber of Commerce and Industries Kashmir (CCIK). Among those present were Joint Director Tourism Waseem Raja, Regional Transport Officer Srinagar Qazi Irfan, SSP Traffic Srinagar City Ajaz Ahmad, and a CCIK delegation led by President Tariq Ghani. The Minister lauded the organisers for introducing modern transport facilities and reiterated the government's commitment to upgrading transport infrastructure, promoting sustainable tourism, and encouraging private sector participation in key developmental sectors. Later, Sharma visited the Rang-e-Kashmir Exhibition at Sher-i-Kashmir Park, Srinagar, where he interacted with entrepreneurs, artisans, startups, and exhibitors showcasing local products, handicrafts, innovations, and the cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. Commending the participants for their contribution to economic activity and employment generation, the Minister described entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology-driven initiatives as emerging pillars of growth in the region. He stressed the importance of creating a supportive ecosystem that enables young entrepreneurs and innovators to convert ideas into successful enterprises. Highlighting the significance of the Information Technology and Science & Technology sectors, Sharma called for stronger linkages between innovation, skill development, startups, and industry. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to promoting technology adoption, digital empowerment, and capacity-building initiatives for the youth. The Minister also underscored the need to expand market access and institutional support for local artisans, startups, and small businesses to enhance their competitiveness in national and international markets. Reaffirming the government's vision of a progressive and self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma said that sustained investments in infrastructure, innovation, youth empowerment, and entrepreneurship would be instrumental in creating new opportunities and ensuring inclusive socio-economic development across the Union Territory. He urged industry bodies, entrepreneurs, and civil society organisations to work collectively towards building a stronger, more prosperous, and future-ready Jammu and Kashmir.
