Tarun Chugh Calls J&K Statehood Resolution a ‘Political Gimmick’, Questions NC Government’s Governance Record
Jammu, October 3, 2026: BJP National Office Prabhari, Rajya Sabha MP and Gujarat Prabhari Tarun Chugh on Saturday criticised the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government, describing the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly’s statehood resolution as a “political gimmick” aimed at diverting attention from what he termed the government’s shortcomings on governance and delivery of its election promises.
Chugh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and argued that the focus of the administration should instead be on jobs, development and implementation of its commitments to the people. His remarks came days after the J&K Legislative Assembly passed a resolution seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood.
“Omar Abdullah should stop talking about irrelevant issues and present his government’s report card. People are waiting for answers on jobs, development and the promises made to them,” Chugh said.
He accused the National Conference and Congress of pursuing what he described as a “skewed agenda”, while asserting that the BJP was strengthening its organisational presence in Jammu and Kashmir with an emphasis on nationalism and development.
Chugh credited the Narendra Modi government with progress in roads, railways and infrastructure, saying these initiatives had contributed to Jammu and Kashmir’s development potential. He also alleged that the present administration had failed to fully utilise the region’s economic and tourism potential.
Calling the Omar Abdullah government a “failed government”, Chugh said people had expected greater economic and tourism activity and maintained that BJP legislators would continue to raise issues concerning public interests in the Assembly. The BJP had opposed the statehood resolution over references to earlier resolutions concerning autonomy and special status and staged a walkout before the resolution was passed.
Chugh reiterated that the BJP supports restoration of statehood but objected to the political context and language surrounding the Assembly resolution. He cautioned the National Conference leadership against what he termed a return to the politics of the 1990s, saying the people of Jammu and Kashmir were seeking employment, development and effective governance.
On the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Chugh said the exercise was necessary to ensure accurate voter lists and electoral integrity. He questioned the Congress party’s objections to the process and alleged that it was misleading the public on electoral issues.
Chugh also congratulated Indian sportspersons for their performance at the Asian Games and praised the bravery of an Indian pilot for averting a major tragedy. He said Prime Minister Modi’s interaction with the pilot was a matter of national pride.
The BJP leader said his party believed in “constructive development politics” rather than what he described as “breakage politics”. He further claimed that India’s economic and infrastructural transformation under the Modi government had enhanced the country’s standing globally.
The statements were part of Chugh’s wider criticism of the NC-led administration and its approach to governance and the statehood issue.
