Union Home Minister Reviews Progress on Implementation of New Criminal Laws in Puducherry Praises UT's Preparedness; Stresses Early Adoption and Local Language Accessibility



New Delhi, 13 May 2025,ANB;Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, conducted a high-level review meeting in New Delhi with the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Shri K. Kailashnathan, to assess the implementation status of the three new criminal laws in the Union Territory. The meeting focused on the readiness and progress across key sectors including police, prisons, prosecution, judiciary, and forensic infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by the Home Minister of Puducherry, Union Home Secretary, Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Puducherry, Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and other senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Puducherry administration.
During the discussion,Amit Shah commended the Union Territory of Puducherry for its commendable efforts in advancing the implementation of the new criminal laws introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He urged the administration to ensure their timely and effective enforcement. according to the News Service Associated News Bureau ANB that The Home Minister underlined that First Information Reports (FIRs) in Puducherry should be registered in Tamil, the local language, with provisions to make translations available in other languages as needed. He also emphasized that fingerprints of all arrested individuals must be mandatorily captured under the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) to enhance the efficiency and utility of the national database.
           Shah further directed that only the Director of Prosecution (DoP) should be authorized to provide legal opinions in criminal cases to ensure consistency and accountability. He called for the swift and comprehensive implementation of digital initiatives such as e-Summons, e-Sakshya, Nyaya Shruti, and the integration of forensic systems to strengthen the criminal justice process.
