Indian Army Day was commemorated across Kashmir today to mark the historic occasion when General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa assumed office as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on January 15, 1949. The day stands as a tribute to the courage, discipline and unwavering dedication of the men and women of the Indian Army who continue to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation.
Army Day is observed as a reminder of the Indian Army’s proud legacy and its steadfast commitment to the nation under the motto “Service Before Self”. From the towering Himalayas to the deserts, jungles and challenging border areas, the Indian Army remains at the forefront of national defence, displaying resilience, professionalism and selfless service under all circumstances.
In Kashmir, Army Day celebrations were held at Srinagar, Sharifabad, Uri and Tangdhar. Wreath-laying ceremonies were organised at various locations and were attended by senior military officials. Ex-servicemen were also felicitated in recognition of their valuable contribution and lifelong service to the country.
The events highlighted the strong bond between serving soldiers, veterans and the citizens they protect, while also reflecting the rich traditions of the Indian Army.
On this occasion, the nation paid tribute to the bravery and dedication of serving personnel, veterans and their families, whose sacrifices and steadfast support continue to inspire generations and strengthen the spirit of patriotism.
