LG Kavinder Gupta Meets Union Health Minister JP Nadda; Seeks Stronger Healthcare Support for Ladakh

New Delhi, November 21 — Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, met Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Shri J.P. Nadda in the national capital to discuss priority issues concerning healthcare development, medical education, and public welfare in the Union Territory.

During the meeting, the Lt Governor expressed gratitude for the continued assistance provided by the Union Government and highlighted progress on key projects, including Ladakh’s first Medical College and the proposed Nursing College in Leh. He informed the Minister that major procedural steps—such as land allotment, release of central funds, and submission of proposals for construction and staffing—have already been completed. He requested the Ministry to expedite the remaining administrative approvals to ensure early operationalisation of both institutions.

Gupta also emphasised the need to accelerate the upgradation of District Hospital Kargil from 100 to 200 beds. While construction of additional infrastructure is underway, he noted that timely approval for the creation of essential posts is critical to make the expanded facility fully functional.

Seeking improved healthcare access for government employees and residents, the Lt Governor urged the establishment of a CGHS wellness centre in Leh, citing the lack of such a facility for thousands of central government employees and pensioners serving in Ladakh. He further requested full PMJAY coverage for the entire ST population of Ladakh and revision of the premium to accommodate higher healthcare delivery costs in the region.

Gupta also proposed the setting up of a specialised AYUSH Hospital and requested consideration for an AIIMS campus in Leh to strengthen tertiary healthcare and research capabilities in the trans-Himalayan region. He reiterated Ladakh’s commitment to developing a robust and inclusive healthcare ecosystem with continued support from the Centre.

Union Minister JP Nadda appreciated the efforts of the UT Administration and assured full cooperation in enhancing healthcare services and expanding medical education in Ladakh. He stated that the Ministry will examine the proposals and extend all possible support under existing schemes and priorities.
