LG Leads Massive Anti-Drug Padyatra in Kulgam, Links Campaign to Fight Against Narco-Terrorism

Srinagar, June 1: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday led the “Drug-Free J&K Padyatra” in Kulgam, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and dismantling narco-terror networks across Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing a public gathering, the Lieutenant Governor described the anti-drug campaign as a people’s movement that has united communities across the Union Territory with the common goal of making every village and town drug-free. He said the campaign has witnessed active participation from parents, teachers, religious leaders and youth volunteers, who have joined hands with the administration in the fight against drug abuse. Stressing the need for sustained efforts, he called for continued public vigilance, unity and community engagement to protect families and guide young people towards a better future. The Lieutenant Governor noted that the movement, launched 51 days ago, has gained significant momentum with widespread public participation, transforming what began as a spark of change into a strong collective resolve against drugs. Highlighting the security dimension of the campaign, Sinha said the crackdown on drug trafficking was directly targeting the financial networks that sustain terrorism. He stated that proceeds from the illegal drug trade are often used to fund extremist activities and that curbing narcotics smuggling weakens forces attempting to destabilize the region and mislead the youth. He said the campaign was not only a public health initiative but also an important component of national security, aimed at safeguarding young people from addiction and preventing criminal networks from exploiting vulnerable communities. Referring to the administration’s anti-drug operations, the Lieutenant Governor said extensive coordinated action had been carried out against drug traffickers and narco-terror elements over the past 51 days. He said enforcement agencies had intensified raids, disrupted supply chains and taken action against individuals involved in drug smuggling and peddling. According to official figures shared during the event, 923 FIRs have been registered against drug traffickers during the period, while more than 1,000 smugglers and peddlers have been arrested. Over 55 traffickers have been detained under the PIT-NDPS Act, 668 driving licences have been cancelled and recommendations have been made for the revocation of 124 passports. The Lieutenant Governor said the administration’s strategy extends beyond enforcement measures and includes efforts to break supply chains, raise public awareness and ensure rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals affected by substance abuse. He reiterated the administration’s resolve to free the youth from the grip of addiction and enable them to contribute positively to society and the development of Jammu and Kashmir.
