LG Sinha Calls Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra a Symbol of India’s Spiritual Heritage, Unity and Cultural Identity
Srinagar, June 25: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said that the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra is a living embodiment of India’s spiritual consciousness, cultural heritage and humane values, urging collective efforts to preserve and strengthen the centuries-old tradition for future generations.
Addressing the valedictory session of the International Conference on Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, organised by the Government Degree College for Women, Anantnag, in collaboration with the District Administration Anantnag, the Lieutenant Governor described the annual pilgrimage as a powerful symbol of social harmony, faith and national unity.
He said the sacred yatra represents patience, prayer and a deep spiritual connection, adding that true spirituality lies in self-realisation and inner enlightenment.
Highlighting the inclusive character of the pilgrimage, Sinha said generations of local families and communities, irrespective of faith or background, have contributed to serving pilgrims, reflecting a shared human consciousness that transcends religion, language and regional identities.
“At a time when divisions are emerging across many parts of the world, Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra offers a unique model of peaceful coexistence. It reinforces the message that faith should unite people and strengthen the shared values of humanity,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor said the pilgrimage also showcases India’s cultural diversity, with devotees from across the country bringing different traditions and languages while fostering mutual respect and national integration. He described the yatra as a true reflection of India’s enduring ideal of “unity in diversity.”
Emphasising the economic significance of the pilgrimage, Sinha said thousands of families, including pony operators, traders, artisans, transport providers and hoteliers, derive their livelihood directly or indirectly from the annual yatra, which also contributes significantly to regional development and infrastructure growth.
He stressed the importance of balancing development with environmental conservation, saying sanitation, waste management, biodiversity protection and animal welfare remain key priorities. He noted that the administration is committed to organising a zero-waste pilgrimage through initiatives such as complete waste recycling, structured waste collection systems and the “Bring Plastic, Take a Bag” campaign.
The Lieutenant Governor said major infrastructure upgrades have been undertaken over the past few years to improve the pilgrimage experience. Both the Baltal and Chandanwari routes have been widened to 12 feet, illuminated for night movement and are inspected and repaired regularly during the yatra. Ambulances have also been deployed at designated locations to strengthen emergency response.
Looking ahead, Sinha said the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra has the potential to emerge as a global centre for spiritual tourism, introducing international visitors to India’s rich traditions of philosophy, yoga, meditation and spirituality while strengthening the country’s cultural diplomacy.
He further highlighted the integration of modern technology into pilgrimage management, stating that online registration, RFID and GPS-based monitoring, CCTV surveillance, digital information systems and advanced communication technologies have enhanced safety, accessibility and transparency while preserving the pilgrimage’s spiritual essence.
The conference was attended by Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor and CEO of the Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board, Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari; Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services and Sports Department, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudhary; Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg; IGP Kashmir V.K.
