JAMMU, APRIL 01: The Government on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to the phased regularisation of daily wagers in Jammu and Kashmir, with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announcing that the process will begin during the current financial year.
The Chief Minister made the statement in the Legislative Assembly while responding to a Private Member’s Bill moved by Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami, which sought regularisation of casual and other workers across various government departments.
Clarifying the Government’s stance, the Chief Minister said that while there was no opposition to the intent of the proposed legislation, concerns remained regarding its timing. He noted that the Government had already made a formal commitment to initiate regularisation and intended to honour it.
“Not even a month has passed since the announcement was made. Raising the issue at the very outset of the financial year appears unnecessary,” he remarked.
Reiterating that the Government recognises the long-standing concerns of employees who have served for years, the Chief Minister said their regularisation remains a priority. He added that the matter is currently under review by a designated committee and stressed the need to await its recommendations.
Urging a constructive approach, he appealed to Tarigami to withdraw the Bill in light of the Government’s assurance and the ongoing process. Subsequently, Tarigami withdrew the legislation.
Meanwhile, another Private Member’s Bill on the same subject, introduced by Waheed ur Rehman Para, was put to vote and rejected by the House through a voice vote.
