IGP Kashmir Chairs Annual Crime Review Meeting of Kashmir Zone at PCR Kashmir

December 27: IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi, IPS, chaired the annual crime review meeting of the Kashmir Zone at the Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir. The meeting was attended by all Range Deputy Inspectors General, District Senior Superintendents of Police of the Kashmir Zone, JDP ZPHQ, and other senior officers.

At the outset, participating officers briefed the IGP on the overall crime scenario in the Kashmir Zone and outlined measures taken to prevent crime and enhance the quality of investigations. In addition to general crime, detailed discussions were held on investigations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the status of property attachment in UAPA cases, terror-related and terror-financing cases, detentions under the Public Safety Act (PSA), NDPS and narco-terror cases, and POCSO cases. Preventive actions, pending inquest proceedings, and efforts to arrest absconders were also reviewed.

District SSPs made detailed presentations on crime prevention initiatives, registration of FIRs and e-FIRs, the status of investigations, and the disposal of cases in their respective districts.

Reviewing overall crime investigations, IGP Kashmir appreciated the efforts of district heads in crime prevention. He emphasized the need to further strengthen investigation standards and highlighted the importance of improving conviction rates through better investigation practices, increased use of scientific tools, and a robust follow-up (pairvi) mechanism, particularly in narcotics and terror-related cases. He directed officers to put in place a strong system to ensure convictions in NDPS and UAPA cases to dismantle the narco-criminal and terror ecosystem. The status of preventive measures and pending inquest proceedings was also assessed.

The IGP issued clear directions on crime control, investigation, prosecution, and the timely disposal of cases, aimed at enhancing accountability, improving investigation quality, and ensuring the prompt delivery of justice.

He also instructed district heads to conduct regular capacity-building workshops for investigating officers to enhance professional competence and legal understanding through the effective use of information technology, with special emphasis on addressing pendency in NDPS cases. District heads were further urged to personally monitor and chair periodic crime review meetings in their respective districts.

Concluding the meeting, IGP Kashmir reaffirmed the J&K Police’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the expeditious disposal of cases to ensure timely justice and public welfare.
