Devyani Rana Urges Government to Focus on Public Grievances, Says Maharaja Hari Singh Holiday Must Be Retained
SRINAGAR, SEPTEMBER 22: MLA Nagrota Devyani Rana today opposed any move to reconsider the public holiday marking the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, saying the issue is closely linked with the historical and cultural sentiments of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Rana said the holiday was approved in 2022 by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha following a long-standing public demand, which, she said, had also been pursued by late Devender Singh Rana. She maintained that the holiday represents recognition of Maharaja Hari Singh’s contribution to Jammu and Kashmir and should not be withdrawn.
“The holiday is the fulfilment of a genuine and emotional demand of lakhs of people of Jammu and Kashmir. Maharaja Ji’s holiday will not be cancelled,” Rana said.
She urged the elected government to give priority to issues directly affecting people’s lives, including the regularisation of daily wagers and the concerns of SCARD depositors awaiting the return of their deposits.
Rana also called for consideration of a waiver of interest on pending electricity dues, saying relief was needed for households facing mounting power bills. She said the government should focus on addressing public concerns rather than allowing attention to shift towards issues that could lead to political or social divisions.
“The people voted for solutions, not for divisive distractions,” she said.
Rana further said that the departments concerned with these issues fall under the jurisdiction of the elected government and called for greater accountability in addressing pending matters.
She also urged the administration to strengthen financial management and ensure that development initiatives are implemented systematically and within defined timelines.
Rana said the people of Jammu and Kashmir expect governance focused on employment, financial relief, development and resolution of long-pending public grievances, while respecting the region’s history, heritage and cultural sentiments. ANB
